Elden Ring Gameplay Review – Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, has not been amused by comparisons to The Legend of Zelda series. “I feel deeply unworthy of the comparison,” Miyazaki said of the early Zelda games, which he called “monumental” works. But it’s difficult not to notice the Zelda series’ influence, particularly the seminal open-world adventure The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, on his new game, Elden Ring, from his company FromSoftware.
The open-world Dark Souls successor’s breadth and challenge demon’s are astounding.
Nintendo’s 2017 Zelda game appears to have had a significant and overwhelmingly positive influence on FromSoftware’s beloved action-RPG style. Elden Ring is a hugely impressive adventure with incredible breadth and depth, blending From’s style of rich, challenging combat with fantasy elements.

Elden Ring Gameplay Review
It all begins with the Tree Sentinel. The first thing you see in Elden Ring’s vast fantasy world, the Lands Between, is this meaty, golden warrior astride a powerful steed. In your current state, he’s nearly impossible to defeat. However, just behind him is a church where he can seek refuge and supplies, as well as a castle to explore. There are abundant natural resources in the woods around you, which you can use to craft curative items. Elden Ring quickly communicates that your means of survival necessitate exploration, learning, and growth, as well as returning to face challenges, such as the Tree Sentinel, when you’re physically and mentally prepared for them.
Anyone who has faced a Lynel in Breath of the Wild will be familiar with this process.
Elden Ring is unmistakably a continuation of Miyazaki’s Souls series, and it hits many of the same beats: A quiet, blank-slate warrior journeys to a far-off, blighted land where both man and beast are cursed by some awesome power and cataclysmic event. And, while Elden Ring begins its dialogue with the player in ways that are familiar to anyone who has played those renowned games, the dialogue quickly changes only minutes into the game.

Elden Ring Gameplay Review: Map
The game’s massive map! and yes, there is an actual on-screen map this time is only just revealed to you at the start. However, as you travel by foot and horseback, you will come across enemy encampments, castles, dungeons, catacombs, caravans of warriors, and the occasional friendly face.
Every discovery in the world helps you grow stronger, whether through experience or financial gain. For example, in an easily accessible catacomb tucked away on a nearby cliffside, I find an equip able talisman that restores vital health points when I land critical hits. In an enemy camp, I discover a better shield that completely absorbs enemy strikes. I find Golden Seeds at glowing saplings, which add extra charges to my healing flasks. Every new ability I discover makes the next challenge just a little bit easier.
Many of the challenges in Elden Ring are enormously difficult. Take, for example, Margit the Fell Omen, a twisted, stocky, stick-wielding warrior who appears to be in the agonizing process of turning into a tree.
It feels almost impossible to face him alone in the early hours of Elden Ring. However, I can now summon a trio of ghostly wolves to fight alongside me, as well as a powerful warrior in spirit form. Neither makes Margit easy; boss battles in FromSoftware games are notoriously difficult, and Margit’s immediate successor is even more difficult, but Elden Ring provides me with a plethora of tools to make myself a little more capable in tense situations. I can also visit the Roundtable Hold, a hub area geographically disconnected from the Lands Between, to strengthen my weapons of war even further.
After 45 hours of playing Elden Ring, I’ve defeated three of the game’s major bosses. They’ve given me powerful runes that I can use to temporarily empower my character. I also have a large arsenal of weapons and magic at my disposal, including swords, pikes, clubs, bows, and even a rusted anchor. I’ve studied healing spells and pyromancy. I can concoct lethal perfumes to poison my adversaries.

I can summon a ghostly jellyfish or a snakeman to fight on my behalf. I can prepare sour dishes made of mushrooms, animal livers, and wild fruits that cure ailments or grant a temporary buff. Elden Ring’s toolkit for becoming more capable in the face of adversity is extensive and impressively diverse, but it has not transformed me into a god.
Elden ring gameplay review – Powers. That is to say, Elden Ring retains FromSoftware’s signature high level of difficulty. Just as From has provided me with a wealth of tools for customizing my play style, it has also compensated by deploying some of the most difficult and frustrating enemies it has ever created. But I’ve found solace while riding my steed Torrent through the game’s open-world areas, discovering caves and catacombs and wrecked little towns where I can find even more tools to arm myself with. For example, I recently learned how to summon a disembodied fire-breathing dragon head at the end of my arm. And it feels fantastic.

Elden ring gameplay review for the Lands, Between is dotted with both large and small destinations. Yes, there are massive, maze-like castles to explore, but there are also underground tunnels and mines where I can farm materials and battle unique bosses of varying difficulty. I’m getting better in the moments before harder and harder boss battles.
The Lands Between offer a wide range of experiences, from towering mediaeval fortresses to putrid, poison-flooded forts, from gorgeous autumnal landscapes to caverns carpeted with skinned corpses. One area of the game, a rotten, red-skyed land called Caelid, is so desolate and unsettling that simply existing in it was exhausting. Once again, FromSoftware has raised the bar for depressing fantasy worlds.
